How Long to Cook Steak on the Grill - Cuso Cuts

You can smell it from three blocks away. Someone is grilling up a steak. Now, you’re hungry and have meat on your mind, but you want your steak done right. So, how long do you cook a steak on the grill?

Success with steak depends on knowing a few tricks. For novice grillers, start your adventure with inexpensive cuts. You can always marinate them to improve tenderness.

Refer to my tutorial reels for help on TikTok or Facebook . Be patient with yourself. Even seasoned grillers mess up sometimes.

How Long to Cook Steak on the Grill: The Basics

  1. If your steak is frozen, leave it overnight in the refrigerator to defrost.
  2. Leave your steak at room temperature for a half hour before you cook
  3. Use that time to preheat your grill to 475F-550F. Some people go higher, but a slightly lower temperature is easier to control.
  4. Time to make the meat happy! Brush your steak lightly with olive oil and apply seasonings all over. You have a lot of rubs from which to choose, including those I share below. Press them lightly with your hand.
  5. Wrap the steak in plastic wrap and let it sit for 30 minutes before grilling.
  6. Place the steak and turn it (once on each side). The time depends on the doneness you prefer.
  7. To get grill marks, turn the steak 90 degrees midway through the searing
  8. Rest for at least 7 minutes

Rare: 4-5 minutes per side, internal temperature 125F.

Medium Rare: Sear 5-6 minutes per side, internal temperature 135F.

Medium: 6-7 minutes; internal temperature 145F

Well Done: 8-10 minutes per side; internal temperature 160F.

Pay close attention to well-done steaks, as they can get leathery.
